About Steven Anderson
I am a self-taught visual artist working across oil, charcoal, graphite, ink, and clay. Before turning to fine art full-time, I spent years in graphic design, advertising, and marketing — work that sharpened my instinct for visual storytelling and still shapes how I compose a piece. My work returns again and again to inheritance, autonomy, and the weight bodies carry, often quite literally, until the distance between viewer and subject starts to close.

Artistic Journey
My portfolio spans a range of series and standalone pieces, each one built to hold a complex narrative rather than illustrate a simple one. Every work operates as a conversation between past and present, asking the viewer to sit with the story behind the figure or portrait in front of them.
Seen and Felt
Leonardo da Vinci once observed that painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen. Each piece in the portfolio is paired with a poem for that reason, not as an explanation of the work, but as a second way into it. The image gives you the moment. The poem gives you what the moment doesn't say out loud. Read one before the other, or not at all, but together, they're meant to do what neither can do alone.
A note on authorship: The paintings are mine. The poems were created in collaboration with Claude, an artificial intelligence. This creative experiment intentionally reopens Leonardo’s question by asking what changes when the painter is human, but the poet is not?
